How to Turn Your Passion Into Profession

turn passion into profession

When you’re absolutely passionate about something, you’re always more willing to do it. When it comes to your career, it just makes sense to do something you love, right?

Working on something you have an intimate love give you a reason to care and go the extra distance. It causes you to be more inspired, creative and fulfilled throughout all areas of your work. As a fashion consultant, this is something I get to appreciate on a daily basis, as my love of all things stylistic fuels my creativity and success at work.

So, with that in mind, here are a few vital steps to help any active Muslimah looking to take what’s important to them and incorporating it into their working life!

1. Understand Your Passions

Unfortunately, it’s not enough to just know what you love. If you truly care about something, you need to identify with it in more detail. Not only does this give you a clearer focus, it allows you to target a niche within that industry.

For instance, a common example could be the likes of fashion. Are you interested in hijab style and wardrobes, or perhaps you’re interested in the design process? Each of these has different areas and you will be drawn to some more strongly than others.

Similarly, you can achieve this by learning how your passion has shaped your life up to this point. You may find it’s made a positive impact in very specific areas, so use this to your advantage.

2. Be a Self-Made Expert

Most experts are defined by their knowledge and appreciation of their field, not their degree or certificate. If you’re committed and involved in a given area, you should be looking to learn and develop as much as possible. Grab anything you can on the subject – read, consume and discuss it as much as possible.

The truth is, to truly turn a something you enjoy into a career you need to make it your own and always be at the forefront! This is a big part of what I do. It’s not enough to simply follow fashion, I have to be looking up the leading trends and gaining knowledge of the industry’s very forefront. In other words, it’s the difference between an expert and a hobbyist. It also allows you to be constantly working on your knowledge, expertise and skills.

Of course, you need not do this on your own! It’s always good to reach for extra help, whether its discussions, professional mentors or even taking educational courses!

3. Make a Plan

There is no such a thing as the overnight success, so make a plan of action to work for your success. A business plan helps put your passion into perspective and lets you identify key actions.

This should be as detailed as you can make it with realistic expectations, of course! If you’re planning a new business, then you need to know how you will market it. In turn, this involves researching possible audiences, the products they want and even how much you can afford to sell them for. It gets you thinking like a professional!

4. Get Started Now!

There are very few good reasons to put something off until tomorrow. If this is something you truly want to do, then start today!

It’s easy to be intimidated, especially when facing the great unknown, but this shouldn’t get the better of you. If you’re committed, you need to push through with your plan.

Often, the first step is the hardest to take. Whether you feel confident or not, even a small step forward will help you get the right momentum. Turning any dream into a career takes hard work and effort, so don’t expect immediate results.

5. Celebrate Every Win

Turning a passion into a profession is a tough, slow journey, so it’s important to make most of every little success along the way.

Always ensure every positive result gets noticed. It’s your work and creativity doing the results, so you need to be your own boss and know when to reward yourself. Celebrating keeps you inspired and will keep you from feeling burnt out and exhausted.

6. Get Involved

Virtually all professions are part of a larger industry and this is an opportune way to be seen and recognised as a professional. How will people recognise you as part of this wider business if you’re not visible? If you want to be seen as an expert, then you need to attend events and interact with people from like-minded businesses, as well as getting exposure to potential clients.

7. Remember The Parts You Love

Turning a passion into a full-time profession is one of the best things you can do, but you should never lose sight of why you loved it in the first place. As you become more focused in the production side, you might forget to enjoy the products you’re making or the people you’re interacting with. It’s okay to take a step back once in a while, even if only to truly appreciate everything that you’ve accomplished.
